A Local Approach to Sustainable Landscaping
Fern and Fawn Landscapes was built on a simple belief: outdoor spaces should be as healthy as they are beautiful. We specialize in ecological garden design and restoration, helping homeowners reconnect with nature through resilient, low-impact landscapes.
We value native plants, water-wise solutions, and thoughtful land stewardship. Our designs are guided by the unique microclimates of Vancouver Island’s West Coast, creating gardens that support biodiversity, encourage pollinators, and evolve gracefully over time.
With a passion for creativity, environmental responsibility, and hands-on craftsmanship, our goal is to bring sustainable gardening into everyday living—one landscape at a time.

Samantha Ferguson
Owner and Founder, Fern and Fawn Landscapes
Samantha grew up on the wild shores of Sproat Lake surrounded by rich west coast forest. She carried her love of local flora and fauna into the University of Victoria where she pursued a degree in Geography and Environmental Studies and developed a keen interest in Ethnobotany.
After a decade in the silviculture industry and hundreds of thousands of trees planted, Samantha became disillusioned with practices that created monoculture forests and used chemical fertilizers and pesticides. She left that world in 2005 and focused on raising two beautiful children whilst continuing to cultivate her gardening skills at home and for clients.
In 2017 Samantha established Fern and Fawn Landscapes, inspired to increase her knowledge of landscaping practices that nourish soil, support biodiversity and care for the environment. Studying Organic Horticulture and Ecological Landscape Design with Gaia College has given her the skills to follow these principles. She now has a long list of clients that she has cultivated strong relationships with and whose gardens she knows intimately. When not consulting with clients or working with her crew you can find her in her garden or in the forest with her dog Willow.

Tristan James

After hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2010, he studied Horticulture at Vancouver Island University and Permaculture Design at Oregon State. He is also a graduate of the Canadian Outdoor Leadership Training Program through Strathcona Park Lodge.
When he’s not leading the crew or consulting with clients you can find him at the Dojo training for his black belt in Renbukai Karate or playing board games with his 2 kids.
